Wheelchair Basketball at Geelong Arena June 19th

posted 3 Jul 2016, 00:07 by Will Melican

Some of our volunteers recently represented the Geelong Supercats in some exhibition wheelchair basketball games at the Geelong Arena.

We played against teams from both Bendigo and Shepparton in a small round robin tournament. Our hope is that this will be the first steps towards a state-wide series of tournaments to be run throughout next year.

We would like to thank the Geelong Arena for hosting the games, as well as the referees/scorers.

Also a huge thank you to everyone from Bendigo and Shepparton who travelled down to play on the day.

As part of our Schools Program we attended St Josephs College Geelong to be a part of their year 11 Community Week.

Over the week Parallel Sports ran a daily program of wheelchair basketball.

This program is extremely popular and wheelchair basketball was embraced enthusiastically by all participants.

Our team of presenters were all impressed by the attitude and positive responses from the participants following the program.

SEABL Curtain Raiser

On Friday 8th of April, our members participated in a basketball match as a curtain raiser to the SEABL men's game between the Geelong Supercats and Kilsyth.

We played against a team from Kilsyth, who travelled down especially for the event, and played a fantastic game which was decided by 2 points.

Thanks to Dean Anglin and Basketball Geelong we were treated as honorary Supercats for the evening, playing on the main show court of the Geelong Arena and we had reserved court side seats for the men's game which the Supercats won comfortably.

Thanks to all the players who were involved, especially those from Kilsyth who took the time to travel down to play in the game. Thanks also to the referees who officiated the game and to Dean Anglin and all of Basketball Geelong for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this amazing experience for our club.

In mid 2015 the Boccia State Championships were held at Try Boys Stadium in Geelong and we were invited to assist with running the event on the day.

Our members helped with setting up and moving equipment as well as scoring some of the games. This was a fantastic opportunity for our members to experience a new sport.

Thank you to those who were able to help out on the day.
